Tag Rugby success for Rearcross FC Selection
(Photos included at end of report )

Rearcross FC turned their attention to a somewhat alien sport at the weekend when they travelled to neighbouring Kilcommon to take part in a hotly contested and well run Tag Rugby tournament, held in conjunction with Kilcommon Festival 2013. In a tournament consisting of four teams, Rearcross began their campaign against a battle hardened Sean Treacys outfit and came out on top on a 2-1 scoreline, a heavy collision between Seamus Costello and Eamon O’ Toole being the stand out talking point of that match. With many of the Rearcross players plying their GAA trade with the Treacys outfit there was much banter between the players and an odd stray pass to the opposing team proved to be the norm with lads from both teams getting slightly mixed up as to who their team mates for the tag rugby actually were. Upperchurch proved lively in their first league game outing against Kilcommon and came into their match with Rearcross in flying form and ultimately recorded a bruising 4-0 victory, despite impressive Rearcross performances from Rob Harrington and Darragh Kennedy. The final group game of the day for Rearcross was against fellow parochial parishioners Kilcommon, Rearcross edging it on this occasion on a 2-0 scoreline.  Attention now turned to the grand final where a hotly fancied Upperchurch side faced Rearcross. The ‘church had comfortably conquered all teams in the group stage so it was a surprise to all, perhaps even to the Rearcross team itself, when Simon Kennedy intercepted a pass in the second minute of the game to storm through the Upperchurch defence and give Rearcross a 1-0 lead. The remainder of the game saw Rearcross deploy a defensive approach Giovanni Trappatoni would be proud of with some heroic tackling and tagging on display, most notably from the O’ Toole siblings Davy, Eamon, Catherine and Geraldine. A delighted Rearcross captain Darragh Ryan (L), first cousin of international rugby player Donnacha Ryan, received the cup from Fr. Dan Woods at the end of the game leaving the Rearcross heroes to dance the rest of the evening away to the Castle Trio and enjoy a well earned victory. Thanks to Kilcommon FC for organising the tournament in conjunction with Kilcommon Festival 2013, special gratitude being reserved for tournament referee Brian Carr who did a sterling job throughout.
